Bilsdale Short Mat Bowls Club

Bilsdale Short Mat bowling club has been running for over twelve years, and is a member of the North Yorkshire Short Mat Bowling Association, and through that association is affiliated to the English Short Mat Bowling Association.
Several of the club's members have already been successful in external competitions.

Bilsdale Short Mat Bowling Club meets for practice every Wednesday at 7pm at Chop Gate Village Hall, and plays indoors all year round. The club is a member of the Kyle Valley Short Mat Bowling League, which operates in the winter, and in the summer the club plays in the White Rose League. Although the club already has some very good players, it is keen to recruit new members, and youngsters are welcome as well as adults.

Bowling Successes

One of the founding members of Bilsdale Short Mat Bowling Club, Gladys Garbutt, won the club's Ladies' Singles Competition in 2006, for the second year running. She beat Nancy Cook and Doreen O' Rourke in a round robin final, by three shots on aggregate. She was presented with the winner's shield by the club chairman George Cook, who made all of the club trophies himself. Sadly, George Cook passed away recently.

Bilsdale Short Mat Bowling Club men’s singles competition was won in 2006 by Arthur Jackson, who last won in 2003. In 2006 George Cook was the runner up, and was rather pleased to have won one of his own trophies for the first time.

Len Lofthouse was the 2004 winner of the men’s singles competition. He beat Gordon Cripps, who was the runner up the previous year as well. Len last won the competition in 1999, and was runner up for the following three years.
